TATA MOTORS GRIHINI - A CASE STUDY
The Tata Motors Grihini movement was started with an objective to provide an opportunity for Grihinis (housewives) to work in the spare time available to them once their daily chores and duties to their families were taken care of. This is the concept of Late Mr. & Mrs. Mulgaonkar (Founder Chairman of Tata Motors Grihini Udyog). This organization has not only given the housewives a chance to earn, but it has given them dignity and respect. All most of the Grihinis are shareholders of their respective operative societies, so in effect they are their own employers.

The Telco Grihini Udyog is divided in four divisions:
  1. Tata Motors Grihini Shivankala Sahakari Audyogik Sanstha Maryadit
    • Products are industrial gloves, uniforms, caps.

    • Eight Centers in and around Pune and 320 members.

    • Financial aid to women for enabling them to purchase their own sewing machines. It has own automatic cloth cutting machine

This was established in 1973 with just 7 Grihinis when life and social attitudes were vastly different from the today. In the initial years of Telco Grihini Udyog, women engaged in business activities were not given due recognition by the society.
Today about 1000 enthusiastic, confident women across the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have become self sufficient, earning members of their families. Profits are distributed among the shareholders and every cooperative is run with professional competence; computers can be seen everywhere. Each cooperative has a separate executive committee.

They used Time Study to determine the time standards for their daily production activities in different sections. They are continuously using productivity improvement techniques such as 5S, Kaizen etc., so that the increasing demand of Tata Motors must be fulfilled within time and with the specified quality; so this suggests their technical competence vis-a-vis the outside world. They use automated machines for their daily activities and this helps in their increasing productivity day by day. The planning and scheduling has been done for the one month and subsequently it is implemented. Whenever deemed necessary the organization imparts special training to enable those concerned to be able to discharge their duties efficiently and this is a continuous process. Tata Motors Grihini Electronics Society has achieved ISO 9001-2000 certificate on 13th October 2004. They achieved certificate of ISO 9001 - 2008 in December 2010.

During the period of vacation of their children/s, they act in coordination and efficiently such that not only the future demand can be met but also the Grihinis can enjoy their family activities during the vacation period. There is an immensely happy atmosphere in this women's cooperative. The women are paid the Government prescribed minimum wage and they also get all statutory benefits. Most of the products are sold to Tata Motors, Pune, though some products like pickles, bags are also sold in open market through their outlets. Each society is run by the women dependents of Tata Motors employees and each woman is a shareholder of the society. In this way, large pool of women power that might have been idle has been made productive. The cooperative has 11 member managing committee which are elected by the members every year. They have turnover around INR 79 million.
So this is a unique example of the Grihinis by dint of strategic thinking and active implementation by hardworking women.
